MKV to WAV Transformation FAQ
How do I extract the audio from an MKV file as WAV?
+
Upload the MKV file and we demux the audio track, then transcode to WAV. There is no second video pass and no quality loss beyond the WAV codec itself.
What audio bitrate does the WAV file use?
+
A lossy WAV is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless WAV (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
Will I lose audio quality going from MKV to WAV?
+
If the WAV format is lossless (WAV, FLAC), you keep every sample exactly. If WAV is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG), the WAV codec recompresses — quality depends on the bitrate and source audio. We default to 192 kbps which is transparent for almost all content.
Does the extracted WAV keep the original sample rate?
+
By default yes — a 48 kHz audio track in MKV becomes 48 kHz in WAV. If you need 44.1 kHz (CD-quality) for compatibility with older players, the advanced options include a sample-rate dropdown.
Can I extract audio from multiple MKV files to WAV in one batch?
+
Yes — drop a folder of MKV files in and we extract audio in parallel. Premium users get more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between 90 seconds and 8 minutes.
Will the WAV file be tagged with title / artist / album?
+
If the MKV file has chapter or stream metadata, we copy artist / title / album fields into the WAV container. Otherwise the WAV file is untagged — use a tag editor (Mp3tag, Picard) post-export if you need richer tags.
How long does extracting WAV from an MKV file take?
+
Audio extraction is much faster than video re-encoding — typically 5-15% of the source duration. A 1-hour MKV → WAV finishes in 3-9 minutes on the standard pipeline.
Can I extract just a section of the MKV audio as WAV?
+
Not in this tool — extract the full audio as WAV here, then use /audio-trim/ or /audio-cutter/ to clip the section. The two-step path is usually faster than a combined operation.
Is my MKV file private during audio extraction?
+
Yes. Uploaded MKV files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted WAV are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why does my WAV file have silent gaps?
+
Usually the MKV carries more than one audio track and the one that was converted is silent or secondary. The converter picks one audio track automatically, normally the main one, and this page has no setting to choose a different track. If the wrong one comes out, remux the MKV with the track you want first (VLC or ffmpeg can do this) and convert it again.
Can the WAV extraction be stereo / mono / 5.1?
+
Channel layout is preserved from MKV by default — a 5.1 MKV produces a 5.1 WAV where the codec supports it (AAC, FLAC, OGG). You can force stereo or mono via the channel-downmix option, useful for podcast workflow.
Does the extracted WAV play on iPhone / Android / car stereo?
+
MP3 plays everywhere. AAC / M4A plays on Apple and most Android. OGG / Opus needs a recent player on iOS. The advanced options expose a "device" preset that picks the WAV codec most likely to play on your target.
