What is a VOB file?

VOB (Video Object) is the container format for DVD-Video media.
What is an MPEG program stream, and why is my file one?

It is a multiplex designed to be decoded by fixed-function hardware in real time, not to be edited on a computer. Audio and video packets are interleaved with timing markers so a set-top box can start playing from anywhere in the stream, without an index and without buffering the whole file. That design is why VOB content plays on old equipment flawlessly and confuses modern software regularly. A VOB holds MPEG-2 video, AC-3 or PCM audio, and DVD subpicture subtitle streams, split into 1 GB segments by the DVD spec.
Why does everything from a disc come out as VOB?

Because the disc format specifies it. The video, the audio and the navigation on an optical disc were standardised around this exact payload so that a fixed-function player could decode it with no software at all. Anything ripped from a disc therefore arrives in it, complete with the era's conventions — interlacing, hard size limits and file splitting included. VOB is the Video Object container found in the VIDEO_TS folder of every DVD — an MPEG-2 program stream with DVD-specific navigation data added.
Why will my browser not play a VOB file?

Browsers ship decoders for a deliberately short list of formats, and VOB is not on it — the licensing, the codec variety it permits, or simply its age keeps it out. The file is not broken and a desktop player will open it, but nothing you do to the page will make a browser render it. Converting to a web-native container is the only reliable route to inline playback. VOB is split across files, may be CSS-encrypted, and carries navigation packets that confuse general-purpose players.
Why does my VOB footage show comb lines on anything that moves?

Because it is interlaced. Content in this format very often comes from the broadcast and DVD era, where each frame is stored as two half-height fields captured a fiftieth of a second apart. A progressive screen displays both at once, so movement between the two exposures appears as horizontal combing. Deinterlacing on conversion weaves the fields into whole frames and the artefact disappears for good.
Why are my VOB recordings split into numbered parts?

A format-level ceiling, not a fault in the recorder. VOB has a practical single-file limit that long or high-bitrate material runs straight into, so capture software splits the recording rather than producing a file it cannot index. Converting to a container with no such limit lets the pieces be rejoined into one continuous video, which is usually the real reason people convert this format at all.
Will VOB play on a phone or TV without flattening the battery?

Usually yes, because the chips in phones, tablets and televisions decode this kind of payload in dedicated silicon rather than on the main processor. That is the difference between a video that plays cool for two hours and one that heats the device and drains it in forty minutes. Where the format falls down is app support rather than decoding — the codec is fine, the wrapper is what a gallery app may refuse.
Should I still be saving new files as VOB?

Only if something downstream demands it. The format still opens, and there is no urgency about converting an archive that is not causing trouble, but it is no longer where the tooling or the efficiency is going. For anything new, a current format costs nothing extra and avoids the next round of this question a few years from now.
Are subtitles inside a VOB selectable, or burned into the picture?

Selectable, if they were added properly. VOB carries subtitles as their own stream alongside the video, so the viewer can switch languages, turn them off, or restyle them in a player that supports it. Burned-in subtitles are also possible — they are just pixels in the frame — but they are permanent, and there is rarely a reason to choose them when the container supports the real thing.
Can one VOB file hold several audio tracks?

Yes — an original-language mix, a dub and a commentary can all sit in the same file with the player switching between them. Two cautions: many phone and television players expose only the first track however many are present, and a conversion into a format without real multi-track support keeps one track and drops the rest. Pick the track you want before converting, rather than discovering afterwards which one survived. VOB preserves the whole DVD payload — multiple angles, multiple audio languages and subtitle tracks all survive inside it.
Does VOB keep chapter markers?

It does — chapters live in the container metadata, so a long recording can be navigated by section instead of by dragging a progress bar. They survive a rewrap into another chapter-aware format and are dropped, silently, by one that has nowhere to put them. If chapters matter, that is worth checking before you pick the output format rather than after.
Does using VOB require a patent licence?

Not for you. The codecs involved are covered by patent pools, and the licensing is settled by the people who ship decoders — the phone, the browser, the operating system — long before a file reaches you. It is why the format is everywhere in hardware and why royalty-free alternatives exist at all, and it changes nothing about converting a file you already have.
