What is a PSD file?

PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop's native format that preserves layers and editing capabilities.

What happens to my layers when I convert a PSD?

They are composited into one flat image, exactly as the file was set to display. Layers, masks, adjustment layers and smart objects have no equivalent in a delivery format, so the visible result is baked in and the editable structure is gone. The output is dramatically smaller and opens anywhere — but keep the PSD itself, because nothing can reconstruct the layer stack from the flattened copy. PSD is huge, opens properly in almost nothing outside Adobe, and has to be flattened before anyone can view or print it.

Why do professional tools hand back PSD?

Because it is built to be worked on rather than distributed. The format keeps quality and structure through repeated opens, edits and re-saves, which is what a production pipeline needs and what a delivery format explicitly trades away. The consequence is size: keep PSD as the master and convert a copy for anyone who only needs to look at it. PSD keeps every editing decision reversible, which is why it is the master format for design work that will be revised.

Is the text in a PSD still editable after conversion?

No — it is rendered into the picture along with everything else. Live type is a property of the working file, and every delivery format stores finished pixels, so a typo spotted after export can only be fixed by going back to the original and exporting again. That is the reason to keep the layered file as the master and to treat each flattened copy as disposable output rather than as the document.

Does PSD keep a transparent background?

Yes — the format stores a real alpha channel, so cut-out logos, product shots and overlays keep their transparency instead of arriving on a white rectangle. Converting to a format without alpha is where it goes wrong: the transparent areas are filled with a solid colour, usually white or black, and there is no way back short of masking the subject again.

Can PSD hold CMYK colour for print?

It can, which is why files from print workflows sometimes look strange on screen: the colours are specified in ink percentages for a press rather than in light for a monitor. Most web-facing formats are RGB only, so a conversion has to translate, and the translation is approximate — saturated cyan and orange shift most. For anything heading to a printer, keep the original alongside whatever you convert.

Does it matter that PSD is over thirty years old?

Age itself is not the problem — several formats from that era are still perfectly good, precisely because everything has had decades to implement them. What matters is what the era assumed: small files, modest processors, no network, and features nobody needed yet. Where those assumptions still fit, the format is fine. Where they do not, that is the reason to convert. PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native document, and it is a working file rather than a delivery format.

Do I need Adobe software to open a PSD?

For reading, no — the format is documented and widely implemented, and plenty of tools open it. For the full feature set the originating application is still the reference implementation, and files that lean on its specifics can differ elsewhere. The conversion here needs no Adobe licence and no local install at all.

Why does a PSD not display in my browser?

Because browsers implement a short list of image formats and PSD is outside it — it belongs to a scanning, print or editing workflow rather than to the web. The file is not damaged; it simply has no decoder in the page. Converting to a web-native image format is a one-step fix and normally makes the file substantially smaller as well.

Can I just rename the extension instead of converting PSD?

Almost never, and it is worth understanding why: the extension is a label, while the bytes inside are structured for one specific format. Renaming produces a file whose name promises something its contents do not deliver, and whatever opens it either refuses the file or misreads it. The one narrow exception is two formats that are genuinely the same container under different names — and even then a proper rewrap is safer than a rename.

Can I convert a whole folder of PSD files in one go?

With an account, yes — drop them in together and they are queued as one job rather than handled one at a time, with the same settings applied across the batch and the results returned together. Free conversions run a single file at a time (merge tools take two); a paid plan is what unlocks batch processing and the larger per-file limit, which is what makes converting a whole archive practical.

Can I make a PSD bigger without it going blurry?

Only modestly. The pixels that were captured are all the detail there is: enlarging either interpolates, which softens edges, or uses an AI upscaler, which invents plausible detail that was never in the original. Both are fine for a step up of a third or so and neither turns a thumbnail into a poster. Start from the largest copy you have and resize down wherever the choice exists.
