AVI to TIFF Transformation FAQ
How do I extract frames from an AVI video as TIFF images?
+
Upload the AVI and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one TIFF from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a TIFF image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode.
At what resolution does the extracted TIFF image come out?
+
Same resolution as the AVI video — a 1080p source produces 1920×1080 TIFF frames; a 4K source produces 3840×2160 TIFF frames. Resize after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame from an AVI file as TIFF?
+
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 TIFF images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
Will the TIFF images preserve the AVI color grading?
+
Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source AVI uses (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to TIFF (PNG / JPG can't store HDR pixel ranges natively).
What is the file size of one extracted TIFF frame?
+
Depends on resolution and codec choice. A 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB; a 1080p JPG quality-85 frame is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame extraction of a 10-min 1080p video at PNG is ~50 GB.
Does the extracted TIFF keep camera EXIF metadata?
+
The AVI container does not store per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the TIFF files come out with empty EXIF. We embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp so you can re-sort the bundle.
How long does frame extraction from AVI to TIFF take?
+
Frame extraction is fast — typically 20-30% of source duration on the standard pipeline. A 5-minute AVI → TIFF bundle finishes in about 1 minute regardless of frame count, because the bottleneck is the TIFF encoder, not the demuxer.
Can I extract frames at specific timestamps in the AVI video?
+
One at a time. Single Frame takes one time in seconds (for example 83 for 1:23) and saves that frame as a TIFF. There is no field for a list of times, so run the conversion again for each extra timestamp.
Is my AVI video private during frame extraction?
+
Yes. Uploaded AVI files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted TIFF are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why are my extracted TIFF frames blurry?
+
Almost always motion blur from the source AVI (the camera was moving when the frame was captured). Try picking timestamps from static scenes, or extract several adjacent frames and choose the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize sharpness.
Does this tool support extracting one frame per scene change?
+
No. The converter has no scene detection and no one-per-second mode: it saves either a single frame at the second you enter or every frame. For one image per scene, extract single frames at the times where the scenes change.
Can I use the extracted TIFF frames commercially?
+
Yes, subject to whatever licence governs the source AVI content. The format change adds no claim — we add no watermark and claim no licence on the TIFF output.
